List of Branches by Size

Main Library

Decatur, with five floors and 53,000 square feet of floor space, is DCPL's main branch. Decatur has the most resources, particularly in the areas of reference and adult non-fiction. Decatur offers the most hours, including year-round on Sundays.

The Decatur Library offers the highest level of reference assistance and services. The collection contains materials of the broadest variety in the system. Decatur Library has two reference librarians available at all times, providing general assistance, instruction, ready reference, and telephone reference.

Area Libraries

Area libraries are the largest branches (18,000 to 21,500 square feet) and are located strategically in each quadrant of the county. They have large meeting rooms and reference collections. Chamblee and Wesley Chapel-Brown are open on Sundays.

Reference collections in area libraries are supportive of the service roles of the specific collections: Dunwoody - fine arts, Redan-Trotti - literature, Wesley Chapel-Brown - African American materials and small business, and Chamblee - small business and multicultural materials. The collections are complemented by special programs. Area libraries have a reference librarian available to provide general assistance, instruction, ready reference, and telephone reference.

Community libraries offer strong circulating collections of material, complemented by special programs. The reference collections at community libraries are selective but well-balanced. Staff are able to provide general assistance, instruction, ready reference and some telephone help. Telephone reference questions might be referred to an area library.

Collections at neighborhod libraries contain circulating popular fiction and non-fiction titles. Some neighborhood libraries offer special programs. The reference collections at neighborhood libraries are small and basic, including an almanac, encyclopedia and some directories. Staff are able to provide general assistance and instruction.
