Monday, April 16	Charles Seabrook :: Author Talks Adult (18+) 7:15 pm—9:00 pm at Decatur For all who care about our region’s glorious natural environment, we have a treat--an appearance by Atlanta environmental journalist Charles Seabrook discussing his important new book, The World of the Salt Marsh: Appreciating and Protecting the Tidal Marshes of the Southeastern Atlantic Coast. Focusing on an area from the Outer Banks of North Carolina to Cape Canaveral in Florida, the book looks at the ecological significance of the marshes, from providing a natural habitat for hundreds of creatures to protecting against costly erosion. Wednesday, April 18	Kevin Wilson :: Author Talks Adult (18+) 7:15 pm—9:00 pm at Decatur The prize-winning young writer Kevin Wilson joins us with a brilliantly inspired new novel, The Family Fang. It’s "a creative and funny story examining young lives in the process of getting skewered, all in the pursuit of art with a capital A.” It centers on a brother and sister trying to navigate their lives in a family headed by bizarre performance art parents. Critics call the novel ”part social satire, part detective story, and part plain good storytelling.” Wilson, who received the Shirley Jackson Award for his first book, lives in Tennessee and teaches at the University of the South and helps run the Swanee Writers’ Conference. Saturday, April 21	Letters About Literature Awards Ceremony :: Author Talks Family (All Ages) 2:00 pm—3:00 pm at Decatur We invite you to one of our most-anticipated events each year: the awards ceremony for our popular Letters About Literature program. Thousands of students in grades 4-12 around the state of Georgia have taken part in this nationally-judged competition in which they are asked to wrote letters to their favorite author, explaining the influence that author has had on their lives. We’ll host the winners, and you’ll get to hear them read their letters in this brief (45 minutes), but memorable program. Tuesday, April 24	Paul French :: Author Talks Adult (18+) 7:00 pm—8:00 pm at Toco Hill-Avis G. Williams Historian and China expert Paul French joins us to talk about his new book, Midnight in Peking: How the Murder of a Young Englishman Haunted the Last Days of Old China. It explores the end of the old city of Peking in the 1930s and the desperate search for a murderer. It’s a remarkable true crime story that best-selling author John Berendt says ”draws a chilling portrait of the city’s decadent, violent and overly-privileged Euro-American expatriate community. Thursday, April 26	Townsend Prize Award Ceremony :: Author Talks Adult (18+) 6:30 pm—9:00 pm at Atlanta Botanical Gardens We invite you to the 2012 Townsend Award evening, a program honoring the best fiction by Georgia authors over the last two years. The nominees for 2012 are Daniel Black, Lynn Cullen, Ann Hite, Joshilyn Jackson, Collin Kelley, Thomas Mullen, Andrew Plattner, Josh Russell, Joseph Skibell and Amanda Kyle Williams. The winner will be announced at the event, and we expect many of the nominees will attend. This event is sponsored by the Southern Academy for Literary Arts and Scholarly Research at Georgia Perimeter College and the Chattahoochee Review. Tickets are $40 per person. The poets include Megan Volpert of Atlanta, Jessie Carty from Charlotte, Stephen Mills from Orlando, and Bryan Borland, the poet and publisher from Little Rock.
