Renovated Dunwoody Library Re-Opens Print E-mail

What a difference just one month can make. A brighter, more appealing Dunwoody Library re-opened July 6 after being closed most of June for renovations. Improvements to the facility, located at 5339 Chamblee-Dunwoody Road in Dunwoody, were financed by the branch’s Friends group, which contributed $185,000 to the project. The Friends wanted to make visiting the facility a more enjoyable experience, and many patrons said they succeeded in doing just that.

“It’s gorgeous, beautiful,” said Fran Bartel, a patron for 10 years. “I can tell a lot of hard work went into it. I’m glad it’s open again.”

“I love it. It looks nicer, neater and better organized,” noted Sandra Acevedo, another patron.

Her eight-year-old daughter, also named Sandra, agreed wholeheartedly. “It’s awesome!”

Designed by architect Maureen Arndt of 720 Design, the remodeled branch has a new entryway with an LCD video display, an updated children’s area and a new service desk. Computers have been grouped together for ease of access and additional room allotted for holds, books and audiovisual materials.

Mike Morrisey, past president of the Friends of the Dunwoody Library, says the Friends are pleased they could make this contribution to their community.

“We are happy that patrons like the improvements. If they enjoy coming to the library even more now, our effort has been worthwhile and we have accomplished our goal.”

The first morning back at the remodeled branch was a busy one for the staff. With a special program for babies in the meeting room and a steady stream of patrons checking out materials, they were bustling. Senior Library Specialist Bea Sherrill was one of the first people to work at the new service desk. She said patrons seemed happy about the renovation and complaints were few.

“It’s a big difference, and we’ll have to make some adjustments. This is just the first morning.”

“Some patrons were a little lost this first morning, but we’re still getting everything back in place,” noted George Ford, the branch manager. “However, the branch looks better and it feels better, and there’s room for growth and expansion. It’s an achievement.”

The Friends plan to celebrate their achievement on Saturday, August 15, with an official celebration. Besides tours of the remodeled library, there will be free book appraisals, activities for children, music and refreshments. The celebration runs from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and the public is invited.
