|Library Ready for Special Summer Events and the Vacation Reading Program|
DeKalb County Public Library is ready for summer 2014 with plans for lots of exciting, special programs and the annual Vacation Reading Program (VRP), too. VRP, which promotes the joy and importance of reading and a love for the library, will run from Saturday, May 17 through Thursday, July 31 for babies, children and teens and from Saturday, May 24 through Thursday, July 31 for adults.
To get the kids excited, the Library has planned three VRP kick-off programs. Big Thinkers Science will entertain with awesome science experiments and children will have the opportunity to make a craft and take pictures with the Library’s mascot, Dog in the Woods. The kick-offs are scheduled for:
In addition, teens will have their own special VRP kick-off—a gaming night at the Decatur Library on Friday, May 23 at 6:00 p.m. Like the kick-offs for children, the purpose is to get the teens excited about summer at the library and to encourage them to sign up for VRP.
Library Operations Coordinator Kitty Wilson reminds parents that encouraging their children to read during the summer offers benefits beyond giving them a productive way to spend free time. “Studies show that reading just a few books over the summer months can help your school age children maintain their reading levels so they don’t fall behind in reading when school resumes,” she explains. “Reading to your baby is just as important because it helps your baby develop language and early literacy skills.”
