Resources for People with Visual DisabilitiesLarge Print booksLarge Print Books for patrons unable to read regular print materials are available in every branch. Collection sizes vary by the size of the branch. Books by MailMailbox Books service to the homebound is provided free of charge to patrons who are unable to visit the library. Patrons requesting this service must fill out and submit an application certifying that they are homebound. To apply, call the Mailbox Books Librarian at 404-370-3070 x2280. Described videosPopular films with narration describing the action can be found in the Catalog by searching the subject heading list for Video recordings for people with visual disabilities. AudiobooksAudiobooks (on CD and cassette) are available at all branches. Although these materials are not produced specifically for those with visual impairments, they do provide an excellent method for listening to the spoken word. Audiobooks may be checked out for 3-weeks and renewed twice if not on hold for another patron. Audiobooks may be placed on hold for pickup at any branch. Video MagnifiersVideo magnifiers that enlarge printed text or pictures up to 60 times the original size are available at the Chamblee, Clarkston, Decatur, Dunwoody, Redan-Trotti, Toco Hill-Avis G. Williams, and Wesley Chapel-William C. Brown libraries. In addition, all branches provide hand-held magnifying glasses which may be borrowed from the Circulation or Reference Desk for use in the library. Screen EnlargementInternet stations at 15 branches have large 19" monitors and screen enlargement software to assist low-vision patrons with using the Catalog and Internet. Home Page ReaderInternet stations at 15 branches have software to read aloud web pages, enabling blind and low vision patrons to surf the Internet and read web based e-mail. Kurzweil ReadersKurzweil reading software and scanners are available at Decatur, Chamblee and Wesley Chapel-Brown Libraries. These systems can scan a printed page and convert the text to speech. The Decatur system is geared more towards those with reading or learning difficulties, while the Chamblee and Wesley Chapel systems are designed for use by the blind. Library for the Blind & Physically HandicappedBraille and recorded materials are available from the Georgia Library for Accessible Services to any individual who cannot use standard printed materials. This includes individuals who are legally blind or cannot see well enough to read regular print, persons who cannot hold books or turn pages, and anyone certified as having a reading disability. This free service provides materials and equipment via postage-free mail. Materials are provided by the The National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped of the Library of Congress. Resources for People with Hearing Disabilities:TTY PhonesThe library may be reached via dedicated TTY at: 404-508-7179 The Decatur and Clarkston libraries have public TTYs. Georgia Relay ServiceIf you use a TTY and need to contact anyone at a Library facility without a TTY, please call the Georgia Relay Service at 800-255-0056. Conference Hearing Assistance SystemEnables hearing impaired to participate in programs in the auditorium and larger meeting rooms. Permanent installations:   Decatur, Dunwoody, and Wesley Chapel-William C. Brown. Portable Hearing Assistance SystemSimilar to the above service with the exception that the equipment is stored centrally and is portable. It can be requested in advance for use in any of the Library's meeting and seminar rooms. Sign language interpretationUpon advance request, sign language interpretation may be provided at Library-sponsored programs and events. Closed-Captioned VideosWhenever possible, DCPL purchases videos which include closed captioning. You can locate these videos by doing a Subject List search in the Catalog for: Video recordings for the hearing impaired, or by including the words hearing impaired in a Subject/Title Word search. Resources for People with Developmental and Physical Disabilities:Screen ReadersThe Home Page Reader, screen enlargement, and Kurzweil scanning software can help those with reading disabilities. These systems will read aloud web pages, scanned pages, or existing computer files while highlighting on-screen each word as it is spoken. Assistive Input DevicesFor people who have difficulty using a standard mouse, computers at multiple locations are equipped with track balls and touch screens. Down Syndrome CollectionMaterials purchased with funds from the Danny Armstrong Memorial Library for Special Needs endowment provide information about children with special needs, especially those with Down Syndrome. These materials may be found at various library branches by conducting a subject search for Down Syndrome in the Catalog. Building Access for People with Physical DisabilitiesAll library buildings are accessible to anyone in a wheelchair or with physical disabilities. Most libraries are accessible through electric-powered doors. While every library service may not be directly accessible (i.e., books on the top shelf), the Library will make any reasonable accommodation to provide such services.
