Periodical Subscriptions

DCPL subscribes to magazines, newspapers and other periodicals to:

  • provide an overview of current thinking on various subjects,
  • provide material not yet available in books,
  • supplement books,
  • to provide recreational reading, and
  • provide news coverage on a local, regional, national and international level.

Magazine and newspaper subscriptions at the smaller branches are mainly for browsing, while the larger branches have more extensive collections suitable for reference and research. However, all branches have access to GALILEO which provides the full text of many periodicals.

Only the Decatur Library maintains extensive periodical backfiles including the only holdings over four years old.

Current issues of magazines do not circulate. Some back issues also do not circulate, including titles considered for reference use, such as Consumer Reports, and all titles at the Decatur Library. The remaining back issues circulate for three weeks. Please return magazines you borrow inside the library, as they are too easily damaged in book drops.

The full text of some newspapers, including the Atlanta Journal and Constitution is available via Reference Databases.

A full list of the periodicals holdings, including a detailed listing of the backfiles at Decatur, is available at each branch.

Magazine backfiles include about 100 core titles.

Newspaper backfiles include:

  • Atlanta Constitution 1868 -
  • Atlanta Journal 1883 -
  • Decatur-DeKalb New Era 1884 - (includes former titles)
  • New York Times 1851 -
