Author Biographies
CARMEN DEEDY
Born in Cuba, Carmen Deedy fled to the United States and settled in Decatur. She has become one of America’s most popular storytellers and authors. She told of her early life in a memorable audio CD, Growing Up Cuban in Decatur, Georgia (1995). She has written seven prize-winning books for young readers beginning with Tree Man (1993). Her books include, The Library Dragon (1994) and her most recent, Martina the Beautiful Cockroach: A Cuban Folktale (2007). She has been a commentator for NPR and a guest at storytelling festivals around the country.
JOSHILYN JACKSON
Joshilyn Jackson grew up in Alabama, went to school at Georgia State University and the University of Illinois-Chicago and now makes her home near Atlanta. Her delightful first novel, Gods in Alabama (2005), won the Southeast Booksellers’ “Novel of the Year” award. It was also a national #1 Book Sense selection, as was her second audience-pleasing novel, Between, Georgia (2006). Her latest novel, The Girl Who Stopped Swimming (2008), has been called “a skillful unraveling of family secrets and betrayal.”
TERRY KAY
Born in Hart County, Terry Kay has become one of the South’s best-known and most beloved writers. A former sportswriter and film and theater critic for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, he wrote his acclaimed debut novel, The Year the Lights Came On, a classic coming-of-age story, in 1976. His most recent novel, The Book of Marie (2007) was short-listed for the prestigious Townsend Prize for Fiction. His dozen books include To Dance with the White Dog, a prize-winning book that has become a global bestseller. He was inducted into the Georgia Writers Hall of Fame in 2006.
J. TOM MORGAN
J. Tom Morgan was the District Attorney for DeKalb County (1992-2003) before resigning to enter private practice. He also is the author of Ignorance Is No Defense: A Teenager’s Guide to Georgia Law (2007), a manual to familiarize young people with Georgia’s laws that affect them and their rights. He is in demand as a speaker for student assemblies, student groups and parent groups. He is a nationally known expert in the prosecution of crimes against children and has been featured in People and Parenting magazines and has appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show and NBC’s The Today Show.
NATASHA TRETHEWEY
A native of Mississippi, Nastasha Trethewey won the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry in 2007 for her collection, Native Guard. She now holds the Phillis Wheatley Distinguished Chair and is Professor of Poetry at Emory University. Her inaugural book, Domestic Work, appeared in 2000 and was winner of the Cave Canem Poetry Prize. Her second collection, Bellocq’s Ophelia (2002), was named a Notable Book by the American Library Association. Her awards include a Grolier Poetry Prize and a Pushcart Prize.
